When playing Vengeance, ensure you use the JA2_Vengeance.exe - Using the normal ja2.exe will not work, and will corrupt your data!

It is also highly recommended to turn off all antivirus software when playing V:R (and most other JA mods for that matter) or set an exception for JA2_Vengeance.exe. We discovered even programs like Avast can cause issues, crashes or even prevent you saving games at times.

Finally, ini options have been set to provide a challenging but fair game environment with the intention for balance.


Also with VR having more than a few extra features, we also needed a few extra keyboard shortcuts, listed below:

- Ctrl+D - skip interrupts for this merc only (original interrupt system)
- Ctrl+Alt+D - skip interrupts for player team (original interrupt system)
- use [l] key to raise your weapon or binoculars then right click to scan
- use [u] key to manually unjam gun*

*Due to 1.13 having so many gun jams an unjam feature was added where mercs can attempt to unjam their weapon. Enemies also have this ability and it is bound to be a common sight on the battlefield. We recommend keeping LESS_JAMS ini option set to TRUE, unless you want repeated veiws of your team and opponents unjamming their weapons, especially at the start of the game when Arulco's army has poor quality guns.

If you find the game gets stuck with a never-ending stopwatch animation (usually during the enemies turn) we suggest hitting the Esc key, this can sometimes break the deadlock and continue playing.

Hi, it keeps sayin smackw32.dll file is missing, which is not, because this file is just there. But its ok for me, I guess I am gonna wait until the final version is out anyway. I hope, its not going to be forever, because this finally looks great and I appreciate you stick with the old fashioned inventory too. Thanks

Issues with smackw (which is mainly for front end movie animations) could be just an install error and is an old problem, but not one I've heard for a while. Try installing your base game first and give it another go, or alternatively someone maybe able to upload another .dll file.

We may well have a new SCI soon with an updated exe for some of the more common bugs showing up on the boards. We have tried to cater to old and new players alike and personally I'm not a fan of the new inventory system, but at least having the choice keeps everyone happy most of the time.

No worries, Omega, I prefer to play with a new story too as there's only so many times you can play the same scenario.

No fixed ETA, but hopefully soon, dependent on code and our SCI technician, though better we hold off and try and fix everything that's been flagged so far. : aww

Not entirely, Anv's full time work in the games industry takes up most of his time but he's been kind enough to fix up some old stuff that was broken or unfinished which we're eternally thankful for.

A changelog would be good, but we haven't done one for years. I might piece together a few notes or what I can remembers been fixed or added.

Most mods tend to remain Beta to the end of days, so you might as well give the Beta a go. Most of our .exe updates seem compatible with old saves to some degree, but it's not guaranteed. The more people playing and reporting bugs will only improve the latest version.

****Known issues****

*Crashes when assigning tasks from vehicle
A few reports have highlighted crashes when traveling via vehicles and then assigning mercs to tasks or using sector facilities. It is suggested to have all mercs exit vehicles before assigning them to other tasks. Do not assign tasks while they are still in the vehicle. This is not a definite fix but seems to limit the chances of crashes.

*Old Bloodcat ambush bug still present
Being ambused by Bloodcats can sometimes lock up game. Progress has been made with Flugente find some stray code. Seven FM is looking to integrate this fix to see if it puts this bug to rest for Vengeance: Reloaded.


*Ultimate Fighting Contest bug still present
It has been recently reported that the old bug where Kingpin heads toward the boxing ring and then stalls has reared it's head again. This is an old bug that plagued Vanilla, and was thought squashed, but sometimes occurs. Best to ensure you save before talking to Darren or initiate the ultimate boxing fight.

*Some snitches still refer to Vanilla NPC's when reporting.

*It has been noted recently that there can be issues relating to newly recruited mercs arriving by parachute later on in the game, sometimes the plane flying overhead sound can be heard but no parachute animation plays and the game goes into a strange loop or you cannot assign your new recruit. It is suggested you try and save your game before this happens, as usually you will need to come out of this looping game and reload. Usually the issue disappears once reloading or you can move mercs to an adjoining map to have them appear in game. Another option to break this loop is hitting the Esc key. In fact hitting the Esc key whenever the game locks up can sometimes be an easy way out of a number of issues.

April Update!

This merges and items update fixes a number of issues and has some improvements and tweaks. In particular SWAT armour can now be treated with Compound 18 which was missing before. Zylon armour has yet to be looked at.

No, you don't need to add the Experimental project. However Vengeance does use a few (more than a few!) of Seven's features, as he is coding on this mod.

sevenfm: Thank you very much for the update. I just finished altering a bunch of settings in the JA2_options.ini from the Data-Vengeance directory. Will this update overwrite those settings if I install it? Also, are there any new adjustable variables to that JA2_options.ini...? The reason why I ask, if there aren't any new adjustable variables, I'll just backup my modified JA2_options.ini and reinstall it after I install the Vengeance update.

Also - the update has two compressed files in it. One file's larger than the other. Could someone summarize for me what the difference is between the two files? Is the larger file more experimental, or...?

There are no new settings as far as I know, so you can use your options file. I would not recommend installing new version on old gamedir, instead better make new installation over clean vanilla ja2 in a separate folder, and copy your settings there. You can also use winmerge if you want to check for changed default options in new SCI.
There are no compressed files in VR SCI, it's just one archive file that you need to unpack over clean ja2.

I'm currently trying to install the mod on windows 10 but I keep getting the following error when I try to initialize the mod: Could not initialize library [ Data\Ambient.slf] in : profile [ SLF Libs ], path [Data\Ambient.slf]

I have been playing most of the 2.13 mods for a few years and I sincerely enjoy the game as a whole so I have to play this partcular mod! Any help would be appreciated, sincerely.

make sure that all files from the .7z are unpacked to the main folder (some files need to be replaced) and start the game with the ja2_vengeance.exe. I had the same message today happy

Using vanilla Ja2.exe in 1.13 folder corrupts game data so you need to reinstall the game.
Why are you running ja2.exe when this game uses it's own Ja2_Vengeance.exe? It will not work even if you use stock 1.13 ja2.exe

Early on in development the team decided to withhold the cheat feature, one of the main reasons for this was to encourage play testers to report bugs and evaluate balancing better. Unfortunately the GABBI cheat can compromise the game's integrity, and no one wants to seek out bugs that normally wouldn't appear without cheating.

This may change in the future as Vengeance has been around for a couple of years now publicly, but we are still searching and destroying bugs when we can find them.

Hi Hawkeye, Great mod! Question for you if you could help me out. I'm trying to make some update to the "XML Editor" but these updates aren't carrying through to the game 'JA2_Vengeance." Any tip?

I'm hoping I'm not saving the update correctly. For example I had difficulties getting my updates to the "INI Editor" carry to the game, but discovered that I needed to change the default drop down "Select INI-File:" from "Data-1.13\Ja2_Options.INI" to "Data-Vengeance\Ja2_Options.INI"

Any help you or anyone can provide would be great.

Hey Sub, unfortunately the XML editor is broken, and has been for some years, it shouldn't be used for Vengeance, or any other mod for that matter. The dev team actually faced huge issues with this program after it corrupted a lot our data during development. If you want to make any xml changes, you'll have to do it the old fashioned way with a text editor such as Notepad +.

I'm not too familiar with the ini editor I'm afraid, and suspect that's a bit out of date too. Again best to just edit your changes in a text file, perhaps not the easiest or prettiest way of doing it, but arguably the most efficient.

Hawkeye, thank you so much. There's just one more fix I can't figure out:

-Changing the screen resolution from default (1024x768) to 1280x600. I only know how to update this via the "INI Editor" (looking to avoid using as it could cause added problems). Thoughts on were else I can more safely update?

You can change the game's resolution by editing the Ja2.ini file with a text editor, it's near the end of the file. This file sits in your parent folder (not the Data-Vengeance folder.)

Only allow assigning soldier to vehicle from squad, to prevent possible bugs.

Hello guys and girls !
I am trying to start a brand new VR game but i am having a problem, hopefully a little one. It's the exact same problem as in message #354147, on Page 1 of this thread. Can't find the missing SLF. How can i solve this problem ? I am using the latest download Feb 2021 and the r2730 exe as per instructions. If i am doing something wrong, i am not aware of it. I don't want to reinstall from the zip again, since i have already made my changes in the INI.Editor. I just can't start the game. I hope that there is a simple solution. Also, while i am trying to replace the JA2 exe with the r2730 renamed one, i get a message that it cannot be done because JA2 Gold is open in another program. No such thing though. Only things open are the VR INI.Editor and the web browser.
